Why Choose Peterna Colustrum?

Peterna Colustrum Nature’s Super Health Food:

  • Colostrum is the first liquid excreted from mammary glands immediately after birth.
  • composed of antibodies, growth factors, colostral fat (special energy), antimicrobials, nutrients and 200+ elements that are integral to establishing an optimal start to any mammal’s life.
  • In calves, colostrum is the only substance that a calf needs to build an immune system to deal with its environment and prosper to achieve its genetic potential.
  • SCCL provides clean, consistent, safe, colostrum it needs without inconsistencies and contaminants that can compromise the start of life

SCCL Peterna Colustrum Collection:

  • Unique process honed by veterinarians and engineers over 25 years
  • Composed of antibodies, growth factors, colostral fat (special energy), antimicrobials, nutrients and 200+ elements that are integral to establishing an optimal start to any mammal’s life.
  • Collect colostrum from healthy dairy cows and dry it to create a safe, efficacious, stable, pure and potent product.
  • SCCL provides clean, consistent, safe, colostrum it needs without inconsistencies and contaminants that can compromise the start of life
  • Collected from dairy farms that are licensed to produce milk for human consumption
  • SCCL requires its donor dairy farms to maintain these same high standards when collecting and storing colostrum as they do during milk collection. All utensils and containers that come into contact with the colostrum are kept clean and sanitized.
  • Each farm collects fresh colostrum from cows soon after a new calf is born. The farm reserves what they need to feed the calf (SCCL encourages all donor dairies to follow the Recommended Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle, as published by Agriculture Canada, which specifies the amount of colostrum that should be fed to newborn calves). Any excess colostrum is immediately placed into a sanitized plastic pail provided by SCCL, labeled for identification, and placed into a freezer for storage. Immediate freezing preserves the important ingredients naturally found in colostrum. SCCL’s pail labeling system gives them complete trace back capability to the farm and cow of origin.
  • The frozen colostrum is transported to SCCL Peterna processing facilities that are inspected and approved by the CFIA and the USDA. Here all pails are held until a sample is taken and analyzed in their quality control laboratory. Testing is followed by grading. Pails that meet their product specifications are released for processing, those that do not are not processed.
  • SCCL Peterna focuses on testing and grading each pail before processing helps ensure that their final products retain the highest levels of safety and bioactivity.
  • SCCL Peterna products are made only from natural bovine colostrum collected from healthy cows up to 24 hours after birth.
  • They do not change anything because they believe that all of the ingredients found in colostrum are important and contribute to its wide spectrum of biological activities.
  • Colostrum is more than the sum of its parts, and in order to retain its full spectrum of activity it is important to preserve the natural ratio of all ingredients. They do not remove any components, such as colostral fat. They do not add other ingredients such as blood, serum, whey or chicken eggs, as is sometimes done by other manufacturers.

SCCL Peterna Colustrum Processing:

  • Heat treatment – This key procedure is a multiple-step, proprietary process that achieves pasteurization equivalence without damaging any of the important immune, anti-microbial, and growth factors or nutrients found in colostrum. Carefully timed heating and cooling cycles are both applied under strict controls. Testing is done both during heat treatment and on the final products to ensure that pasteurization equivalence has been achieved and key colostral components are intact.
  • Spray drying – This carefully controlled procedure turns the liquid colostrum into a fine powder that is stable for prolonged periods.

SCCL Peterna Colustrum Packaging:

  • After processing, the colostrum powder is again tested for purity and potency and is then packaged into individual packages or bulk containers
  • After packaging each product, it is again tested to ensure that it meets rigorous quality control standards.
  • Once packaged, the products are stable at room temperature for three years

SCCL Peterna - Potency:

Since the immune globulins (Igs) are the most important immune molecules naturally found in colostrum, potency is based on measuring the concentration of IgG. The most accurate and reliable way of measuring IgG is by using a laboratory test called the radial immunodiffusion (RID) assay. The RID test used is specific for bovine IgG and will detect only functional antibodies. SCCL Peterna uses an RID that is standardized using a reference reagent provided by the USDA. This ensures that their RID is always tested against a standard reagent that does not change over time, and provides highly accurate and reliable results.

Within each grade of SCCL Peterna colostrum, protein, fat, lactose, and energy levels show consistency from batch to batch. The level of key vitamins and minerals are also monitored.

  • Measure and monitor the concentration of important antimicrobial factors, including lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, and lysozyme.
  • Levels of key growth factors, such as insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2 and epidermal growth factor are also monitored.
  • When requested by customers, they measure other important components, such as trypsin inhibitor.

SCCL Peterna - Safety:

To ensure product safety, samples of all manufactured batches are fed to calves. This ensures that there is no health or toxicity risk. SCCL Peterna have never had a batch cause an adverse reaction in calves or fail this safety test.

SCCL Peterna - Efficacy:

Potency testing each batch of product ensures that therapeutic specifications are met. This is based on demonstrating that recipients have therapeutic levels of bioactive IgG in their blood after being fed the product. All SCCL Peterna products filed with the CFIA and USDA have undergone reviewed and filed efficacy testing in newborn, colostrum deprived calves at the recommended dose, and then taking a blood sample a day after feeding.

During efficacy studies, the level of IgG in the calves’ blood is measured by RID to be sure that it has reached target therapeutic levels. If it has, this confirms that the product will be effective under field conditions if administered according to package instructions.
